Who Are We? Bordersology is a travel blog and community for sharing travel advice, experiences, and recommendations. We lived in French Saint Martin and worked in Dutch Sint Maarten during 2023. The following recommendations are based on our own culinary experiences.

(1) gluten-free labelling/options
(2) expensive menus

Bistrot Caraibes (Grand Case) - Ranked #1 on TripAdvisor. No GF labels on the menu. Other menus in Grand Case impressed us more.
Jax Steakhouse (Maho) - Ranked #2 on TA. No GF labels on the menu. They gave us “The Keg” vibes, so we chose other options in Maho.
IZI Ristorante Italiano (Simpson Bay) - Ranked #4 on TA. We did not hear about them. We will try the GF pasta next time in SXM!
The Palms (Simpson Bay) - Ranked #8 on TA. No GF labels on the menu. They have interesting Caribbean fusion food! Locally-run.
Bold Buddha (Philipsburg) - Ranked #10 on TA. We did try this place. We found the sushi rice hard and mediocre. Good drinks!
La Villa Hibiscus (Mont Vernon) - Ranked #17 on TA. Very expensive, but highly recommended as a French fine dining experience.
L'Auberge Gourmande (Grand Case) - Ranked #18 on TA. No GF labels on the menu. Expensive entrees. Better options in Grand Case.
Dinghy Dock (Simpson Bay) - Ranked #24 on TA. Surprised we never made it here. Great happy hour deals! Pub food.
Le Pressoir (Grand Case) - Ranked #1 Restaurant in the Caribbean by Magic of Carib. We did not hear about it. 1 of many GC restaurants.
Nowhere Special (Simpson Bay) - We never got around to this locally-run pub. No GF labels on the menu. Quality drinks menu.
L’Atelier Restaurant (Orient Bay) - We planned to dine here, then saw how expensive the entrees are. Cupecoy Brasserie is more affordable.
Emilios (Sentry Hill) - The location is out of the way unless you are going up Sentry Hill. We have heard good reviews!
Le Piment (Orient Bay) - We considered dining here, but Le Telegraph was more affordable and had more menu selections.
La Cigale (Nettle Bay) - We lived in Nettle Bay and considered it many times, but the entrees are extremely expensive. Go to Mezza Luna instead.
Zee Best Breakfast (Simpson Bay). - No GF symbols on the menu or options. Reveil Matin has a much larger brunch menu!
SAO Asian Factory (Orient Bay) - We did not hear about this place until right before we left. Allergen labels for every dish!
Mood SXM (Grand Case) - Health food, poke bowls, smoothies, freshly pressed juices.
Peter McCool Irish Pub (Orient Bay) - Pub food with a French-Caribbean twist. We did not hear about them while living in SXM.
Sale & Pepe Marina (Simpson Bay) - Italian restaurant. Recommended by readers.
Bikini Beach Bar (Orient Bay) - Great beachfront restaurant and cocktail bar. We recommend Bikini next time you visit Orient Bay.

1) Bamboo House - Cole Bay - Dutch St Maarten
OVERVIEW: In our opinion, Bamboo House could win almost every category; best sushi, best cocktails, best happy hour, best location/ambiance, best customer service, most creative dishes, etc. Don’t just trust our opinion, judge for yourself.
Bamboo House is located in the hills of Cole Bay overlooking SXM Airport, Simpson Bay, and Maho providing one of the best restaurant views on the island! Their location is also one of the best places to watch the sunset on the entire island!
When talking to locals and fellow expats on the island, Bamboo House was consistently recommended as one of the best restaurants. To be honest, we waited too long to try Bamboo House and regret not trying our favourite SXM restaurant until weeks after we arrived. Tables fill up quickly so we recommend making a reservation for your party in advance!
BEST HAPPY HOUR ON THE ISLAND! Sit at the bar (no reservation needed) from 5-7 pm for Buy One, Get One Free Cocktail, Happy Hour Sushi, Happy Hour Appetizers, and great advice from the bartenders!

The Smoked Margarita combines a spicy margarita with a smokey flavour that leaves your taste buds watering for more after each sip. 2) Rainbow Cafe - Grand Case - French Saint Martin
OVERVIEW: Rainbow Cafe in Grand Case wins our recommendation for Best Beachside Restaurant in SXM. Rainbow Cafe makes excellent sushi and their salads are truly exceptional. Everything we tried at Rainbow filled our foodie hearts with joy and excitement!
We recommend heading to Rainbow Cafe for lunch and then spending the afternoon at Grand Case Beach. If you are looking for beach couches and bottle service on the beach, you can even reserve spots directly in front of the restaurant on the beach.
Cocktail lovers will appreciate the ever-changing cocktail menu that the mixologists at Rainbow are happy to prepare for you!
Try the Pepe Margarita - our choice for Best Margarita in our 21 Signature Cocktails You Must Try In SXM Blog! A margarita with just enough pepper infusion to give your taste buds a lingering spicy sensation between each sip.
Rainbow Cafe also features some of the best entertainment and parties on the island! Eat your lunch while the house DJ plays some tunes or buy tickets to one of their weekly themed parties/events!
Spent too much money at Rainbow? Pop next door to Captain Frenchy for cheaper drinks and chair rentals while still enjoying the DJ playing at Rainbow Cafe.

3) PALAPA Grill - Simpson Bay - Dutch St Maarten
OVERVIEW: Palapa Grill proudly shares their story of resilience in the face of natural disaster. Palapa Grill in Simpson Bay has one of the best ambiance/atmospheres in St Maarten. The unique, artsy atmosphere of PALAPA makes use of materials salvaged from 2017 Hurricane Irma. The dining room is framed by a scenic water garden and the entire venue is complemented by art pieces.
We highly recommend the lamb shank and your choice from their creative cocktail menu!

OVERVIEW: ROXXY Beach is the Simpson Bay equivalent of Rainbow Cafe (#2). ROXXY is our recommendation for the Best Entertainment Venue on the island.
ROXXY hosts weekly themed parties and recruits world famous DJs like Afrojack to headline events.
At ROXXY you can expect amazing sushi, salads, appetizers, & cocktails served to you at their beach-side restaurant.
Come for lunch or dinner at ROXXY and you will not be disappointed by the options and experience!

5) Roma + Mr. Chow Combo - Maho - Dutch St Maarten
OVERVIEW: Roma + Mr. Chow Combo is our recommendation for large groups or picky eaters. Why? Roma Cucina and Mr Chow Asian Fusion share a restaurant space in Maho. Two different restaurant kitchens, but they share the same bar. If you sit at the bar or the tables near the bar, you can order from each restaurant’s food + drink menu. You get access to two menus under one roof.
Roma also has many delicious gluten-free options for those with celiac!
Bordersology recommends the Al Fresco @ Roma, #11 in our 21 Signature Cocktails You Must Try In SXM Blog! If you have never tried a Southern European Al Fresco, it is like a gin mojito; sweet flavours combined with the earthy, piney flavour of gin.

6) Mezza Luna - Nettle Bay - French St Martin
Mezza Luna Fish of the Day - Snapper
OVERVIEW: Mezza Luna is an Italian restaurant you will not find in many other Top 10s on the internet. However, we highly recommend this lesser-known gem after living in Nettle Bay! We walked to this restaurant on multiple occasions and each time Mezza Luna impressed us with their ambiance, service, appetizers, cocktails, and Italian cuisine.
If you go to Mezza Luna on a clear evening you can expect to see the stars and moon from their beach-front tables overlooking the Marigot harbour.
Try the escargot, pizzas, pasta, or seafood dishes!
We recommend watching the sunset on the lagoon side of Nettle Bay and then walking across the street to Mezza Luna for dinner.

7) Salt Restaurant + Bar - The Morgan resort - Sint Maarten
OVERVIEW: Salt Restaurant is located in the Morgan Resort near Maho Beach in Dutch St Maarten.
While we tend to stay away from corporate-owned restaurants, Salt is one we have to recommend based on our phenomenal experiences there.
Our first experience of Salt was their Easter Weekend Seafood Tasting Menu. As seafood enthusiasts, it was truly one of the best fine dining experiences we have ever had. We had several different types of fish, scallops, oysters, etc., paired with excellent cocktails and topped off with delicious desserts.
Salt truly has something for everyone, prepared by world-class chefs, and served to your table which overlooks a torch-lit infinity pool. Come experience it for yourself!

8) Le Telegraphe - Orient Bay - French St Martin
OVERVIEW: Le Telegraphe is a popular restaurant in the Orient Bay culinary village on the French Side of the island. Jammed into a Parisian Style culinary avenue, Le Telegraph competes with around a dozen other restaurants who share the village. Le Telegraph is ranked so high on this list because of its location competing with other extremely popular restaurants. Our experience at Le Telegraph helped us understand what sets them apart from the others.
You can expect delicious French Caribbean cuisine, seafood, appetizers, charcuterie, and cocktails!
We found Le Telegraphe to be affordable compared to other restaurants in Orient Bay and the island.

9) Ocean 82 - Grand Case - French St Martin
Mahi-Mahi Tartar Trilogy: Peruvian, Tahitian, Creole Style
OVERVIEW: Ocean 82 is a popular indoor restaurant along Grand Case Beach. Visitors can expect local and international seafood options, an extensive cocktail menu, great service, and views of Grand Case Beach.
Their website explains, “Our menu provides a taste sensation of local produce.” To be honest, after viewing their 2024 new menu (which labels every allergen in every dish) do not be surprised if Ocean 82 moves up our rankings during future edits/updates!
Ocean 82 was featured on an episode of the popular reality TV show Below Deck. Below Deck filmed two seasons in St Martin with the yachts docking in Marigot harbour to pick up guests and supplies!
Ocean 82 has dozens of tables with ocean-view seating.

We truly believe that Lagoonies is one of the most sustainable restaurants on the island! Lagoonies is transparent with where they source their food, what allergens are in the food, and how they can help to raise public awareness. For us, Lagoonies was a delightful surprise solely based on their sustainability efforts.
The food is great and they have affordable deals on drinks.
The daily and seasonally rotating menu(s) have something for everyone, with allergens and vegan options indicated.

Expect high-quality French cuisine and fine dining - on the beach!
Coco Beach has massive outdoor dining tables and private spaces that can host parties of any size. If you are booking for a large group or event, we recommend Coco Beach.
Coco Beach is not a budget-friendly option! Expect small serving sizes for expensive dishes. Expect to pay for the high-quality food and service you receive.
We recommend Coco Beach’s salads and the beef tartare.

La Terrasse provides scenic views over Marigot harbour all afternoon and is also a great location to watch the sunset.
Lunch or dinner your visit to La Terrasse will be filled with great food, drinks, and views.
We recommend the seafood risotto and the duck breast.

When we lived on the island, the menu did not have gluten-free symbols. However, the manager Nick and his kitchen staff are very flexible with creating gluten-free options. Some of the best gluten-free meals we had on the island were at Lazy Lizard!
Lazy Lizard is within walking distance from the cruise ship terminal drop-offs in Philipsburg. There are dozens of restaurants to choose from on the Philipsburg Boardwalk, but somehow we always ended up at Lazy Lizard. What made the difference was the staff! Nick and his staff give each customer excellent, personalized customer service.
Don’t just listen to us, Lazy Lizard is the #2 ranked restaurant in Philipsburg on TripAdvisor with an impressive 4.9/5 rating (1500+ reviews).
Each day there are daily specials that make dining at Lazy Lizard affordable and budget-friendly.

OVERVIEW: Fine-dining French cuisine in Maho
Le Moulin Fou is a great choice in Maho for fine dining or a fancy dinner date. You can expect high-quality food and presentation.
Seafood lovers will appreciate Le Moulin Fou’s catch-of-the-day options and live lobster tank.
Le Moulin Fou also has one of the island’s most extensive wine lists and an in-house sommelier.

15) Avantika Thai - Simpson Bay - Dutch Sint Maarten
OVERVIEW: Our choice for the Best Thai Restaurant In SXM & one of the most gluten-friendly restaurants!
Dining-in or takeout, Avantika will not disappoint! For those planning to dine in, Avantika restaurant has a fine-dining ambiance with Thai-influenced decor. The food is delicious; you can expect Thai staples with international and Caribbean twists.
Avantika has a gluten-friendly menu with each dish labelled as GF or not. This is not a common practice on the island, so we highly recommend anyone with food allergies consider eating at Avantika Thai.

We have also heard good reviews of Zee Best Breakfast, but we never tried them because they seriously lack gluten-free options.

OVERVIEW: Loterie Farm is a nature reserve turned adventure park on the French side of the island.

Cocktail enthusiasts should try the Frozen Guavaberry Coconut, #10 on our 21 Signature Cocktails You Need To Try In SXM Blog. Guavaberry is St Maarten and St Martin’s unique, nationalistic plant, there is even a museum dedicated to it in Philipsburg! The Frozen Guavaberry Cocktail @ Loterie Farm combines the plant with coconut creme and blends it up with ice.
